By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and frame applied economic issues across a range of fields (mostlye environment economics).
  • Mobilise economic concepts and tools to analyse real-world policy questions.
  • Critically assess the methods used in applied economics research (e.g., Integrated Assessment Models, empirical weather-based approaches, behavioural insights).
  • Read and discuss applied economics papers, and communicate findings clearly.

This course introduces students to a range of applied economic issues, drawing on recent research to illustrate how economic tools and methods are used to analyse real-world policy questions. A first block introduces the toolkit through the economics of climate change (global warming as an economic problem, the costs and benefits of climate action, Integrated Assessment Models, empirical approaches to assessing climate impacts, and the role of beliefs and social norms in climate policy). Subsequent sessions will extend this approach to other applied fields, including health, development, education, population, labour, industrial organization, political economy, public economics, and international economics.

Logistics

The course consists of 7 classes, for a total of 24 hours.

Prerequisites

Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of microeconomics and applied econometrics. However, no advanced prior experience in any specific field (environment, health, development, etc.) is required, as the necessary concepts will be introduced as needed throughout the course.
